Right now Commandos act as overwatch, IE find a cliff or roof somewhere and rain down support or hang back a little and help with suppression. A light suit would just die too fast filling these roles, the whole idea of the commando is that it can take heavy punishment, but it can't repair/recharge very quickly so it's generally cover based. We already have a stealthy light suit as the OP has stated, called a scout, we don't need to take a rather unique suit layout and overlap it onto an existing suit. Commandos would in effect just encourage more light assaults as they inherently would be worse for Ewar.
That said, I would like to see pilots come into existence as the second light suit option. I like the idea that was suggested of making pilots carry only a sidearm, one equipment, and minimal mods while being the only suits that can operate dropships and HAVs. Also give the pilot skill level small class bonuses to fitting vehicles, while giving the racial bonuses to fitting certain vehicles. For example Gallente pilot bonus to madrugar, Caldari pilot bonus to gunnlogi, Amarr bonus to Incubus, and Minmitar bonus to pythons, something like that. The Pilot suit could also go through tiericide only supplying the basic level of the suit and maybe if adv and proto tanks/dropships ever reappear making the tanks/dropships require the higher tiered suits to operate them. As in, if you want to operate an adv tier HAV/dropship you would have to use an adv pilot suit.
Edit: As to why the pilot would add fitting bonuses and be required to operate the HAV/Dropship lore wise, it could be argued that the systems used within the vehicles are too complicated without a suit specially designed to integrate the pilot with the HAV/Dropship while with LAVs they operate like standard vehicles with simple manual controls. The fitting bonuses would come with the fact that the suit can optimize the efficiency of the vehicles PG/CPU. |

Also, I want logistics to be heavy frames (similar to the commando in terms of speed and agility though).
Then we would run into the issue of overloading certain categories, because you would then have only one medium suit and 3 heavy suits or 2 heavy suits and 2 light suits. I still think the pilot is the best option as it will balance out suit variety. Commandos can't take a lot of punishment on the frontline because of their large frame with a sub par e/hp trade off, so this change would gimp logi medics.
Frame size makes a large difference in survivability in higher levels of play. That's why people still run scout assault suits even though assaults tend to have 400+ more e/hp than the scout. |
